A Walking Holiday in Sierra Nevada & The Alpujarras, Spain. The “Alpujarras” region, in the province of Granada, is one of outstanding beauty. It is overlooked by the magnificent Sierra Nevada and its seventeen peaks over 3000m! The region was once so difficult to access that the Moors managed to keep it under their control for more than a century after the fall of the Caliph of Granada in 1492. The Alpujarras is a major hiking destination, almost unknown outside the walking community. Over eight days you will witness some spectacular sights; Berber-style villages, streets adorned with flowery balconies, dramatic ravines, country markets, terraced fields filled with olive trees, 800 year-old balcony trails following fascinating irrigation systems. You will also taste Arab-inspired cuisine, drink strong sweet wine and enjoy the passion and drama of a Flamenco performance. A fabulous contrast to the Costa Brava!

The selected towns are ideally located within the Alpujarras chain. They have been selected for their walking location, cultural interests and services. The route, designed by the dedicated One Foot Abroad team, is unique and takes you to unspoiled and spectacular landscapes that will remain with you long after your visit. In the morning, you start your hike with only a light day pack because your luggage will be waiting for you at the next hotel! You don’t carry unnecessary weight during the day, but you still get to wear your favorite outfit in the restaurant that evening! One Foot Abroad provides you with clear maps and very detailed walking notes that describe the route step-by-step. The

After flying to Malaga or Granada, you will have a chance to discover the magic of the Sierra Nevada from the typical village of Capiliera. Here, the white washed, flat-roofed houses are reminiscent of Morocco’s Berber architecture. You will be pre-booked in a spacious en-suite room. Tonight’s menu will include traditional Andalusian cuisine as well as other European dishes. Welcome to the valley of the Alpujarras!

1-Villages of Poqueira valley circular
walk Travel along an old mule trail into the dramatic Barranco
de Poqueira (ravine). Here, the villages appear to cling to the sides of the deep valley. On the way you will find Puente Molino, the perfect spot for a picnic or a swim!
2-Summit of the Mulhacen Scale the Mulhacen (3450m),the highest peak in Spain. It starts with a short bus transfer (€8)to the base camp, then it’s a 4h30/5h return hike. The ascent is easy but should be attempted with care. The trail starts with a pleasant introduction to the contrasting landscapes of the Alpujarras; from agricultural pastures
to barren lands and wild valleys. Then we will follow an easy track down to the quiet and pretty village of Pitres (1243m). Just below is the famous “Taha”; five lovely hamlets named after the old Arabic administrative units into which Las Alpujarras were divided. We take the old Moorish trail down to the Taha. Here, evidence of a medieval silk trade can still be seen in the abundance of mulberry trees – the leaves of which provided food for the silk worms. Taha is famous for idyllic paths and exceptionally pretty villages, climaxing with the finest vantage point (mirador) in the valley – the Mezquita(1194m).

Las Alpujarras has its own unique weather system. Whereas on the coast the temperatures are fairly constant all year round, the combination of mountain air and valleys in Las Alpujarras make the weather more changeable. Summers are often hot and dry, with temperatures in excess of 30 degrees celsius. Rain and cloud is rare, but can occur at higher altitudes, however it never lasts long. Winters are still quite warm and relatively sunny during the day, but can be a lot colder at night after the sun has gone down. If visiting during this time, it is recommended you bring plenty of warm clothing. Both seasons have their advantages – a BBQ in the summer and an evening in-front of a roaring fire in the winter. The best time for walking in Las Alpujarras is from April to mid-June, and from mid-September to
mid-November.

During the first 2 hours we traverse groves – the trees dripping with oranges, olives and figs. Then, entering the woods, the trail climbs up to a pass with an unique view of the Pollenca peninsulas. Today, below looming Mt Massanella, we start a descent through the woods where you will see the ruins of an old village, complete with bread ovens and many sitjas (pits to burn charcoal). After climbing constantly for 2 hours into the woods, we arrive at a small platform with fantastic views over the southern coast of the island. Cuber, heart of the Tramuntana. From the Cuber lake we make our way through the mountains, going down through a narrow gorge on a cobbled path. The gorge is covered with terraced fields, similar to those in Nepal. Then, from Soller we take the wooden train (3, not included) to the cove of the sea port village of “Puerto Soller”. Options: Puig Ofre [1098m] +1h00 & +/-550m, Mirador +1h30 +/- 500m

Calla de Deia. From the refuge we follow well-marked trails across the peninsula. Here, the landscape is bare and wild, not unlike Connemara! After 30min we pass some olive groves and then the spectacular coast of Deia suddenly appears – its cliffs looming above the craggy coast and the azure waters glistening in the coves. From the refuge, we climb steadily into a forest with various sitjas and deserted huts. Then, facing the cliffs, we take a trail hugging the cliff to the Archduke path. This may seem scary at first but in fact the footpath is quite wide and never very steep. From the top we follow the cliff for about an hour, with great views of the coast, the peninsulas, the village just below and the Tramuntana range (here you are 500m above the sea). On the way down you will have the chance to explore Vallehermossa; a splendid village with plenty of shops and restaurants, and one-time home of Frric Chopin.
We will return by bus to Deia (1.50 not included).

Then there is a descent toward the valley across terraced fields, and after crossing the river we continue slightly uphill to a very well preserved but eerily abandoned hamlet. Passing the Roque Sombrero (so called because of its hat-like shape), we start a long but super descent towards a warm and green valley. The Barranco de Juan is so dramatic that it shouldn’t be missed! Finally we pass an unspoiled beach with two small fishermen’s huts before reaching our destination. In Eirexe, the Romanesque portal of the church is a beauty and features a sculpture of Daniel and animals, as well as Santiago de Peregrino inside. You will then arrive in Palace do Rei (565m).

Today, the Camino continues slightly downhill, passing the village of Casanova and the charming village of Leboreiro. At Melide (454m), stop in one of the many restaurants to try some local specialties. Later today, the Camino will follow a forest track and cross several streams bringing you to the village of Boente with its church of Santiago. Then the medieval village of Ribadiso, and finally Arzùa (389m). This small town has 2 churches that you can visit, Santa María and La Magdalena.

NOTE: If you wish to take your time, we can split this walking day in 2 (15km & 13km), staying overnight in the bustling market town of Melide. Here you will stay in a charming 2* hotel in front of the “Refugio de Peligrino”, in the centre of the town.
Take your time and visit the chapel of Santa Irena, with its unique statues of Santiago. The rest of the way to Rua/Opino is on a good and quiet country road.
A Walking Holiday in Catalonia, France and Spain. This walk crosses the border between France and Spain, where the foothills of the Pyrenees fall into the Mediterranean sea. The Vermilion Coast (C´te Vermeille) and the Costa Brava form the most dramatic part of the Catalan coastline; stretching from Perpignan in France to Tarragona, just south of Barcelona in Spain.
Set against terraced vineyards on the surrounding hillsides, turquoise waters ebb and flow in small rocky coves & sleepy little ports that once thrived on sardine and anchovy fishing. The harbour towns of Collioure (the birthplace of Fauvism painting), Banyuls, Port de la Selva and Port Creus, are some of the highlights in this region where the kings of Mallorca once had their summer residences.

This is the land of Catalonia, well-known for its plethora of festivals; where locals dance the “Sardane”, hand-in-hand in the streets wearing handmade canvas espadrilles. The undulating hills protecting these ancient port towns still respect a long wine-growing tradition, producing a lively peppery wine that delights the palate and compliments the unique Catalonian seafood dishes. This is also the region in which Dal grew up, and as you progress in your walk, you too will discover the landscapes that inspired him and see the house in which he was born. In addition, you have the opportunity to visit two museums dedicated to his life and works.

Walking on the route we have carefully selected, from the Vermilion coast in France to the Costa Brava in Spain, offers sun, sea, mountains and the fragrances of the Midi. For 7 days you will follow the coast, and you will have the chance to go for a swim in the warm Mediterranean water every day. At each stage, you are guaranteed maximum comfort and excellent gastronomy. Every evening, you can relax in a friendly and comfortable hotel, typical of this region. Unwind, relax and enjoy!

The Camino Frances / French Way is the most traditional of all the pilgrims’ ways to Santiago de Compostela and the best known internationally.

This Walking Holiday explores the 1st section of the Camino Frances / French Way. It starts in France at St-Jean-Pied-de-Port and finishes in Pamplona, the town famous for its Bull Run festival. At first it follows the ‘Route Napoleon’ over the Roncesvalles Pass (1500m), and then crosses the Basque country onto more gentle terrain.

Everyday, during the walk, you are guaranteed a high level of comfort and gastronomy. The Camino is clearly marked with the “Scallop Shell” showing you the way. This walk can be physically demanding and requires a reasonable level of fitness. However, it’s a highly rewarding walk that includes numerous cultural highlights.

Day 2 – Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port To Roncesvalles (8h, 26km, +1250m -540m).
This first day is considered the most difficult as the Camino crosses the Pyrenees. The “Camino Napoleon” kicks off with a steep climb, on through orchards and past country houses and then, later, through Alpine style meadows, before weaving its way alongside leafy beech woods towards the border and the descent into Roncesvalles. The Valcarlos Camino mainly follows the road which runs through the valley alongside the river Nive or river Valcarlos. Don’t miss the “Collegiate Church” in Roncesvalles.

NOTE: If you would like to walk at a more relaxed pace, we can split this walking day into 2 stages (12km & 14km), staying overnight in the village of Valcarlos. Here you will be staying a charming 2* hotel. We recommend taking this route during the winter months when snow can make the higher route impassable.

The Camino crosses two beautiful mountain passes and continues on through beech and oak woods and meadows before coming to Espinal, where the panoramic views of the countryside with the Pyrenees in the background are a sight to behold. The river Arga runs alongside this part of the Camino and continues its course all the way to Larrasoana.

The Camino runs along the river Arga, at the foot of a group of hills covered in beech, oak and Scots pine. As we approach Pamplona, the landscape shows the obvious influence of civilisation; with its conifers, reforestation and farmlands.
