Walking Holiday in the Verdon Gorge, Provence, France. Provence Hits the Alps and the land of sun and olive trees meets the land of snow and melted cheese. The area is also known for lavender production. The harvest is in august; you will smell the little flower everywhere.

Famous for its local cuisine, this serene region of southern France is a food lover’s paradise. With it’s strong emphasis on fresh ingredients from the countryside such as olives, tomatoes, zucchini eggplant, and lemons, Provencal cuisine has earned the nickname “la cuisine du soleil” (cuisine of the sun).
A Walking Holiday in Tuscany, Italy. Situated on the west side of Italy on the Mediterranean coast, Tuscany is simply steeped in natural beauty, history and culture. Chains of slender cypress trees rise and fall amongst the green brown contours of the Tuscan hills. Here you will discover peace and calm.
http://www.pisa-airport.com/index.php

20 major airlines fly to Pisa: Ryanair www.ryanair.com, easyJet www.easyjet.com, Air France www.airfrance.com, Alitalia www.alitalia.com, Lufthansa www.lufthansa.com, Sky Europe www.skyeurope.com and others.

The taxi rank is located outside the airport’s arrival terminal. Average fare to the city €12.00 (+ a surcharge on Sun & Bank Hols).

FROM VOLTERRA TO PISA

To Volterra by bus: Several buses a day connect Pisa to Volterra from the central bus station (takes 2hrs). Departure 5.35 to 21.30 (10.30 to 18.30 on Sat & Sun). Check CPT www.cpt.pisa.it. On Sundays, the service is less frequent. In August, timetable is subject to changes.

First, line 190 Corsia 1. Pisa to Pontederra (1h)

Then, line 500 Corsia 4. Pontederra to Volterra (1h)

To Volterra by train: First Pisa to Cecina, then a train from Cecina to Salina di Volterra. Finally, a bus will take you to Volterra. This takes longer (3hrs30) but it can be a good option on Sundays when other services may be limited. See www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html.

TO ROME FIUMICINO OF ROME CIAMPINO

Virtually all airlines fly to Rome. From the airport, there is an easy shuttle to Rome Termini train station.

From Rome Termini there are many trains to Cecina (4h30) and a bus to Volterra: www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html.

OTHER AIRPORTS

The train & bus networks in Italy are well developed and relatively inexpensive. It is probably possible to get to Volterra from other major cities in Italy. Ask us for advice and we will help you!

BACK FROM SIENA

This trip will bring you through the “Parigord Noir”, known for its dark forests, medieval chateaux and great food. Dordogne supplies almost half of France’s fine food produce: wine, cpes, truffles, duck and goose, which yield many specialties from foie gras to the “Demoiselle” (the whole bird grilled over a wood fire).

Our team has specially selected our hotels for their location, character, comfort, facilities and
for the quality of their food. While dinner is included, we decided not to include the “picnic lunch”
(Optional) in the trip, this way you can choose stop at one of the many great restaurants along your route.

At first we follow the “piste cyclable” – an old railway track converted into a scenic path – through woodlands. After an hour or so, we leave the path behind and take a marked trail through organic vegetable fields to the cliffside castle of Montfort, overlooking the luxuriant Dordogne valley. Probably the most beautiful walking day. From Vitrac, we cross the Dordogne valley and follow the left banks through cornfields. As we ascend to Domme, the views of the white cliffs on the other side of the river are stunning. After one hour we come to Domme, a very well-preserved medieval village and noted as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Going down, we pass walnut trees, fields and forests. You will soon catch a glimpse of the chateau of Castleneau; a superb example of a fortified medieval castle. Efforts have been made to make a visit there interactive, so don’t miss it! Crossing the Dordogne river again, we follow the right bank through a large poplar forest. On the way into Beynec you can see the 900 hundred year-old fortified castle, sitting majestically atop the limestone cliffs.

To save you an unpleasant walk along the road, we have organised a 15minute transfer to the picturesque village of St Cyprien. The walk today starts with a steep – but short – walk to the plateau above. As we cross vineyards and cornfields, you can see numerous mansions and small castles. After passing through a forest, you will find a great picnic spot, with super views of the valley below. Continuing down, we arrive in Les Eyzies, the European capital of prehistory. The town is nestled between limestone cliffs. We arrive at our hotel early in the afternoon. Here,a large garden awaits you, and of course – an excellent meal.

If you wish, it is possible to stay an additional day here. Les Eyzies is known for its archaeological wealth and its cliffs with numerous underground caves. The village offers a variety of sites & monuments that will interest both adults & children. We recommend a visit to the Museum of Prehistory. Also of interest – The “Cave du Grand Roc”; a cave inhabited by Cro-Magnon people some 14,000 years ago. The cave is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cave “Font de Gaume”, famous for its well-preserved Cro-Magnon paintings is also worth a visit.

A Walking Holiday in Cyprus. Cyprus is a haven for the nature lover. Its wide variety of landscapes from the dunes of the sun-baked coastland, to the snowy peaks of the Troodos Mountains is home to an astounding number of flora and fauna species. There are 8 main areas to explore, each with its own trails.

We have designed this trip in order to give you the best insight to the island’s unspoiled parts: from the high forested Troodos Mountains to the Mediterranean Akamas mountains with olive trees. Our hotels are very comfortable and modern with a special focus on character. As we provide you with a rental car with unlimited mileage, feel free to explore the island at your own pace!

Day 2 – Pitsilia area: This is a mountainous region east of Troodos. The area is covered with natural pine forests and golden oaks. The main products of this area are apples, pears, cherries, peaches, grapes and vegetables.
Day 3-4-5 – Troodos National Forest Park: At the centre of the island, the Troodos National Park covers an area of 9337 hectares. Over 700 plant species have been recorded here, making this park an important centre for botanists and their studies. In addition, the area’s geology is of world-wide importance and the rich flora of the area includes rare plants, like the Lefkara Astragalus, which are strictly protected by the Bern Convention.
Day 5 – Stavros tis Psokas: West of Troodos, explore the most beautiful pine forest on the island and the well-known Cedar valley.
Day 6 – Akamas: This is the easternmost point of the three major flora zones of Europe. Here, the number of plant species alone amounts to 600. Akamas is said to have been named after the son of Theseus who came to the island and founded Akamantis. According to mythology, Akamas was also the place where Aphrodite and Adonis had their love trysts. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and is ideal for walking.

From the car park, we follow another part of the famous “E4″ uphill through the thick Cedar forest to the summit of “Tripylos” (1362m), the highest peak in the area. Here you will get unrivalled views into the steep valley, and the coast of Lemesos. Also, you will have the chance to stop for a picnic lunch along the stream. Finally, either choose to follow the narrow asphalt road back to the car park, or simply retrace your steps along the footpath.

The Ayia Napa Sea Monster is a cryptid, claimed to inhabit the coast off Ayia Napa in Cyprus, a popular tourist resort in the Mediterranean. Most sightings occur around Cape Greco. It is known by the local fishermen as “O Filikos Teras”, which translates to “the friendly monster”. There have been no reports of it causing any harm, although it has been reported at times to rip and drag away fishing nets. There is no evidence that the monster actually exists, except in folklore and through various sightings by tourists and locals alike. There exists little photographic evidence, except unverified short-films and pictures. Many believers of the myth of the Ayia Napa Sea Monster like to link it with the mythical sea monster of Greek mythology called Skylla, which is depicted in the mosaics that remain in the House of Dionysus, a Roman villa from the 3rd century AD in Paphos, Cyprus. Regardless of the fact that its existence has not been scientifically proven, the hope of spotting the Ayia Napa Sea Monster remains a highlight for many tourists on boating day-trips.

A Walking Holiday in Luberon, Provence, France. Set in the heart of Provence, the enchantingly pretty Luberon Hills stretch east to west from Manosque to Cavaillon, and north to south from Apt to the Durance river. The area is named after the main range; a compact massif with an easy 1100m summit. The northern face is steep and rich in oaks, whereas the south is drier and more typically ‘Mediterranean‘.
Most of the Luberon is within the boundaries of the “Parc Naturel du Luberon”, one of the best conserved natural parks in France. The landscape is very subtle; roofs in extremely pretty ochres and terracottas and countless rows of lavender. The area is also dotted with ‘bories’, 1-2 story high beehive-shaped huts constructed in the Bronze Age. No one can say for sure what their purpose was however, some people say they are not unlike Ireland’s ‘clochan’.

Option: Additional night in Apt, located in the heart of the regional Natural Park of Luberon, between the mounts of Vaucluse and the Luberon mountains. This pleasant city, typical of Provence, is renowned for the quality of the products of its “terroir”. Apt will also seduce you by the charm that emanates from the small streets of the old city: ancient fountains, mansions and small shaded plots are part of the decor… No doubt you are in the heart of La Belle Provence! See below our “Options” section for further information.

A Walking Holiday in the Cevennes, France. On the 22nd of September 1878, the young Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson left Le Monastier sur Gazeille (Haute Loire) on foot with his donkey Modestine. 12 days, 220 km and many adventures later, he arrived at St Jean du Gard (Gard). Albeit less famous than “Treasure Island” and “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, his travel diary, published in 1879, entitled “Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes”,has been read and loved by generations of readers.

Today, you can experience a similar adventure by trekking on the same track as Stevenson. You can even take a mule too. The path goes through the heart of the Cevennes National Park – one of the most stunning areas of natural beauty in France. The Cevennes National Park is a protected balcony above the Mediterranean sea on an average elevation of over 1,000m. The path traverses 3 regions (Auvergne, Rh´ne-Alpes, Languedoc-Roussillon) and 4 departments (Haute Loire, Ard¨che, Lozre, Gard), but most importantly, it trails through different country sides, charged with culture, history and gastronomy. Bonne route!

Details on how to commute from Lyon airport to Le Puy en Velay can be found in “Additional Information”, together with an option to be transferred directly by One Foot Abroad. Le Puy is a pleasant town with about 20,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the Velay area, which we’ll traverse during our walk.
Although the walk starts tomorrow from Le Monastier sur Gazeille (930m), One Foot Abroad still caters for you from Le Puy. This way, you can buy your last minute items, enjoy this welcoming town and rest after a long day travelling.

In 1878 some village folk waved goodbye to Stevenson from this very spot. Although he was warned about “wolves, cold, thieves and death”, we assue you that nowadays, a walk in the Cevennes is rather more tame! In Goudet (785m), we cross a small river that has its source in near-by Mont Gerbier des Joncs. At this stage, it’s hard to believe that this small river is, in fact, the Loire – the longest river in France (1012km).

Here, the memory of the “ferocious beast”, a wolf that allegedly terrorised the inhabitants, lives on in the stories of the locals. Stevenson’s descriptions describe the area in wonderful detail. Indeed, Langogne remains a beautiful town with its 11th-century Romanesque church. After Luc, the path straddles 2 departments; Ard¨che and Loz¨re. Further on, in Rogleton (990m), you can go directly to your hotel (45 min walk) or, if you feel like it, you can continue some 8 km to the “Trappe de Notre Dame des Neiges” (1091m, 2hr45). This will result in a walking day of around 7h30 and 27km in total.
