Enjoy a Walking Holiday on the Amalfi Coast, Italy. Sometimes called the Sorrento Peninsula, the Amalfi coast is one of the most breathtaking coastlines in Europe. The Peninsula is a mountainous land of limestone cliffs and majestic scenery. These world-famous landscapes, home to many celebrities with sumptuous villas and private beaches, can be explored though a network of historical paths and ancient mule tracks, taking the walker from the fabulous sea shore to lesser-known areas where one gets a feel for authentic Italy. We cross citrus and olive groves and stop in picturesque villages and towns such as Ravello, up the hills in Lattari, or Positano by the sea.

Our team has specifically designed this itinerary in order to explore the truly amazing jewels of Amalfi, Ravello, Atrani and Positano. The walk, though steep at times, does not present any major technical difficulty and walking days are kept relatively short so you can enjoy the village at your own pace, stopping for a swim or a picnic as you wish. You can extend your stay at the end of the walk by spending additional days in Positano or Sorrento, perhaps stopping to explore the Punta Campanella or the romantic Ischia and Capri islands. In addition, you could visit the bustling city of Naples and historical Pompeii.

Today, we walk up through the Valle Dei Mulini (where paper mills date from the 13th Century) and reach a refreshingly shady forest with pretty waterfalls. The climb takes us to a small, “off-the-beaten-track” village, called Pontone where the views of Amalfi and Atrani are just spectacular. From Pontone, it is a short walk to historic and world-renowned Ravello (370m), once home to great artists like Wagner, Greta Garbo and DH Lawrence. We then descend to secret Atrani and back to Amalfi.

From Amalfi to Praiano, we walk on a historical mule track dating from the 9th Century. The path takes us along the coast, traversing villages and charming squares with their quiet, shaded churches. Then, it’s time for the spectacular fjord of Furore and the remote valley of Praia, which gives its name to the picturesque town of Praiano.

A short but moderately steep ascent takes us to the Grotto of Santa Barbara, carved into a cliff overlooking the sea a few hundred metres below. The small town of Bomerano is a good spot to rest, before walking along the famous “Sentiero Degli Dei” (Path of Gods), from which we can admire the island of Capri. From the narrow paved streets of Praiano, we ascend to the Sentiero Degli Dei (Path of Gods) via the Convent of Saint Dominico. Here, the famous path affords us some of the best views of the coast and nearby islands on one side, and looming peaks and cliffs on the other side. The extremely well preserved village of Nocelle (440m) will welcome you into its sinuous streets. From here, it’s only a short stroll to Montepurso, from which we descend into Positano itself, giving us the opportunity to travel through one of the most beautiful villages of the coast from the top of the hill to its heart by the sea.

The Circular walk will take us to a higher altitude, giving you the chance to breathe some fresh sea air. You can take a bus to Montepertuso (350m) to shorten the ascent, or you can start straight away from your hotel in Positano. There is an impressive natural arch supporting a rock wall on the way. We reach the top of the hill at Santa Maria (680m) where the walk continues though a forest of Cypress trees on the high path of the Lattrani mountains (805m). Then, it’s a zig zag descent to Positano where you can rest and enjoy a good meal and some well-deserved refreshments.

A Walking Holiday in the Calanques in Provence, France. The Calanques stretch for twenty kilometres between Marseille and Cassis. These limestone mountains, which reach 565 meters at Mont Puget, glisten dazzlingly, much like the Mediterranean sea onto which they face.
Renowned for their beauty and charm, the Calanques consist of narrow valleys surrounded by abrupt rocky facades, dug out through the ages by rivers and now submerged entirely by the sea.
In the midst of these rocky formations, lies the small fishing port of Cassis. Here you will spend your evenings on the terrace, enjoying the area’s gastronomic treats; fresh seafood and white wine.

Marseille is a cosmopolitan city with plenty of character. We recommend that you take a stroll on “Le Vieux Port” (the old harbour) and experience the Moroccan souks (markets). In the morning, a short bus ride (20mins) brings you to Cassis, a quaint harbour town where you will spend the next 2 nights. You will start your walk in the direction of “Port-Miou”, a harbour in a small white creek. Then it’s uphill to “Vallon d’En-Vau” following a century-old mule trail, where you may spot some some eagles. After that you will follow the coast to the Vallon de la Gardiole, before coming back to Cassis via the famous GR93 (a well-known long-distance trail), through Garigue’s provincial bushy lands and passing Mussugui¨res Plateau, and its marvellous views.

A Walking Holiday in Sierra Nevada & The Alpujarras, Spain. The “Alpujarras” region, in the province of Granada, is one of outstanding beauty. It is overlooked by the magnificent Sierra Nevada and its seventeen peaks over 3000m! The region was once so difficult to access that the Moors managed to keep it under their control for more than a century after the fall of the Caliph of Granada in 1492. The Alpujarras is a major hiking destination, almost unknown outside the walking community. Over eight days you will witness some spectacular sights; Berber-style villages, streets adorned with flowery balconies, dramatic ravines, country markets, terraced fields filled with olive trees, 800 year-old balcony trails following fascinating irrigation systems. You will also taste Arab-inspired cuisine, drink strong sweet wine and enjoy the passion and drama of a Flamenco performance. A fabulous contrast to the Costa Brava!

The trail starts with a pleasant introduction to the contrasting landscapes of the Alpujarras; from agricultural pastures
to barren lands and wild valleys. Then we will follow an easy track down to the quiet and pretty village of Pitres (1243m). Just below is the famous “Taha”; five lovely hamlets named after the old Arabic administrative units into which Las Alpujarras were divided. We take the old Moorish trail down to the Taha. Here, evidence of a medieval silk trade can still be seen in the abundance of mulberry trees – the leaves of which provided food for the silk worms. Taha is famous for idyllic paths and exceptionally pretty villages, climaxing with the finest vantage point (mirador) in the valley – the Mezquita(1194m).

Las Alpujarras has its own unique weather system. Whereas on the coast the temperatures are fairly constant all year round, the combination of mountain air and valleys in Las Alpujarras make the weather more changeable. Summers are often hot and dry, with temperatures in excess of 30 degrees celsius. Rain and cloud is rare, but can occur at higher altitudes, however it never lasts long. Winters are still quite warm and relatively sunny during the day, but can be a lot colder at night after the sun has gone down. If visiting during this time, it is recommended you bring plenty of warm clothing. Both seasons have their advantages – a BBQ in the summer and an evening in-front of a roaring fire in the winter. The best time for walking in Las Alpujarras is from April to mid-June, and from mid-September to
mid-November.

Walking holidays in Cinque Terre, Italy. Quite possibly the most beautiful coastal walk in Europe, on the most magnificent part of the Italian Riviera. The Cinque Terre are five coastal, medieval, villages in the province of La Spezia: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of a national park of the same name. The Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Walking through the National Park, you will discover the coastline as well as the backcountry: villages that cling to the cliffs, tiny sandy beaches and sandy coves as well as terraced fields and extensive woodlands. Given its location on the Mediterranean, only the freshest fish and seafood are good enough for the local cuisine. The anchovies of Monterosso are a local specialty, while the extensive terraced olive groves provide oil for some of the best pesto in Italy.
As this trip is centre based, you will be able to stay in the heart of the National park and explore the area as you wish (see “Cinque Terre Card” below).

During the Middle Ages this mule track was of great importance, as it passed just in front of the historical sanctuary of Our Lady of Soviore.

This walk follows a historical mule track, which connects Riomaggiore with the Marian Sanctuary of Montenero (340m). The path was used for solemn processions to the sanctuary, which was built a long time before the construction of the St John the Baptist parish of Riomaggiore.

This is a short walk, but one of the most rewarding. Heading north, we follow the coast towards the spectacular peninsula of Fegina. In Levanto you can go for a swim or have an ice cream by the beach. Ideal for a half-day excursion (day of arrival or departure, for example).

As you are going up you can see “Teide” (3700m) Tenerife’s (and Spain’s) highest peak. Coming to the plateau, you follow a remote dirt track and a small country road to the Garajonay Visitor Center. Here, you’ll have the chance to learn about the island’s unique eco-system, listed in the UNESCO catalogue! After the village of Las Rosas, we follow a ridge to the dramatic Roque Cano (Protean Rock) that dominates the entire valley. The flora today consists of different kinds of bushes, pine trees, Cactus plants and their tasty fruits!Be sure to sample the superb local sea-food. We start by walking through a remote valley, inhabited only by goats and geckos. After passing a tiny church, we go down the ravine following the GR 132 path, and up towards the Tequergenche cliffs, where the views are astonishing. Here you will have the option to walk to “Las Pilas”, a popular view point, then on to “El Hiero” and “La Palmas” (1hr30 return). Then there is a descent toward the valley across terraced fields, and after crossing the river we continue slightly uphill to a very well preserved but eerily abandoned hamlet. Passing the Roque Sombrero (so called because of its hat-like shape), we start a long but super descent towards a warm and green valley. The Barranco de Juan is so dramatic that it shouldn’t be missed! Finally we pass an unspoiled beach with two small fishermen’s huts before reaching our destination.
A Walking Holiday in Cyprus. Cyprus is a haven for the nature lover. Its wide variety of landscapes from the dunes of the sun-baked coastland, to the snowy peaks of the Troodos Mountains is home to an astounding number of flora and fauna species. There are 8 main areas to explore, each with its own trails.

We have designed this trip in order to give you the best insight to the island’s unspoiled parts: from the high forested Troodos Mountains to the Mediterranean Akamas mountains with olive trees. Our hotels are very comfortable and modern with a special focus on character. As we provide you with a rental car with unlimited mileage, feel free to explore the island at your own pace!

Day 3-4-5 – Troodos National Forest Park: At the centre of the island, the Troodos National Park covers an area of 9337 hectares. Over 700 plant species have been recorded here, making this park an important centre for botanists and their studies. In addition, the area’s geology is of world-wide importance and the rich flora of the area includes rare plants, like the Lefkara Astragalus, which are strictly protected by the Bern Convention.
Day 5 – Stavros tis Psokas: West of Troodos, explore the most beautiful pine forest on the island and the well-known Cedar valley.
Day 6 – Akamas: This is the easternmost point of the three major flora zones of Europe. Here, the number of plant species alone amounts to 600. Akamas is said to have been named after the son of Theseus who came to the island and founded Akamantis. According to mythology, Akamas was also the place where Aphrodite and Adonis had their love trysts. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and is ideal for walking.

From the car park, we follow another part of the famous “E4″ uphill through the thick Cedar forest to the summit of “Tripylos” (1362m), the highest peak in the area. Here you will get unrivalled views into the steep valley, and the coast of Lemesos. Also, you will have the chance to stop for a picnic lunch along the stream. Finally, either choose to follow the narrow asphalt road back to the car park, or simply retrace your steps along the footpath.

The Ayia Napa Sea Monster is a cryptid, claimed to inhabit the coast off Ayia Napa in Cyprus, a popular tourist resort in the Mediterranean. Most sightings occur around Cape Greco. It is known by the local fishermen as “O Filikos Teras”, which translates to “the friendly monster”. There have been no reports of it causing any harm, although it has been reported at times to rip and drag away fishing nets. There is no evidence that the monster actually exists, except in folklore and through various sightings by tourists and locals alike. There exists little photographic evidence, except unverified short-films and pictures. Many believers of the myth of the Ayia Napa Sea Monster like to link it with the mythical sea monster of Greek mythology called Skylla, which is depicted in the mosaics that remain in the House of Dionysus, a Roman villa from the 3rd century AD in Paphos, Cyprus. Regardless of the fact that its existence has not been scientifically proven, the hope of spotting the Ayia Napa Sea Monster remains a highlight for many tourists on boating day-trips.

A Walking Holiday in Corsica, France. Though Corsica has been governed by France for over 200 years, the island maintains a distinctly ‘Corsican’ identity. Corscians take pride in their native customs, language (Corsu) and traditions, not to mention their entirely unique landscape.

In many ways, Corsica resembles a miniature continent; with 1000km of sea-swept coast line, mountain ranges that stay snow-capped until July, a world-renowned marine reservation, an inhabited desert (Agriates) and a continental divide running down the centre of the island!

Much of the island is covered by maquis, a typical Corsican shrub-like vegetation used for fragrances and cooking. Just a single day’s walk can carry you through a kaleidoscopic landscape of secret coves, booming waterfalls, plunging canyons, sweeping bays, megalithic menhirs and dense chestnut and pine forests. Away from the holiday resorts you will discover quiet fishing villages, remote mountain towns and deserted beaches.

When a private room is available, we always privilege this option for our clients. The toilets and showers are shared with the other walkers in the Gite.

When a private room is not available, bedrooms comprise of 4 or 6 beds (unless stated othwerwise). Bed linen and towels may not be provided at each accommodation so it is better to take them with you in case. Also, a sleeping bag can be useful and save you taking bed linen.

A Walking Holiday in Catalonia, France and Spain. This walk crosses the border between France and Spain, where the foothills of the Pyrenees fall into the Mediterranean sea. The Vermilion Coast (C´te Vermeille) and the Costa Brava form the most dramatic part of the Catalan coastline; stretching from Perpignan in France to Tarragona, just south of Barcelona in Spain.
Set against terraced vineyards on the surrounding hillsides, turquoise waters ebb and flow in small rocky coves & sleepy little ports that once thrived on sardine and anchovy fishing. The harbour towns of Collioure (the birthplace of Fauvism painting), Banyuls, Port de la Selva and Port Creus, are some of the highlights in this region where the kings of Mallorca once had their summer residences.

This is the land of Catalonia, well-known for its plethora of festivals; where locals dance the “Sardane”, hand-in-hand in the streets wearing handmade canvas espadrilles. The undulating hills protecting these ancient port towns still respect a long wine-growing tradition, producing a lively peppery wine that delights the palate and compliments the unique Catalonian seafood dishes. This is also the region in which Dal grew up, and as you progress in your walk, you too will discover the landscapes that inspired him and see the house in which he was born. In addition, you have the opportunity to visit two museums dedicated to his life and works.

Walking on the route we have carefully selected, from the Vermilion coast in France to the Costa Brava in Spain, offers sun, sea, mountains and the fragrances of the Midi. For 7 days you will follow the coast, and you will have the chance to go for a swim in the warm Mediterranean water every day. At each stage, you are guaranteed maximum comfort and excellent gastronomy. Every evening, you can relax in a friendly and comfortable hotel, typical of this region. Unwind, relax and enjoy!

Note: it’s possible for you to shorten the day by taking a taxi from Cap Creus directly to Cadaques [16km, 5h45, around €20]
