A Walking Holiday around Mont Blanc in France, Italy, and Switzerland. The “Tour du Mont Blanc”, also called “TMB”, is one of the most famous and iconic walking trails through the Alps. It passes through three countries offering three diverse experiences; the Italian slopes with their large rock faces, the Swiss slopes with their soft valleys and the French glacial slopes.
The route below was selected so as to allow you to carry as little heavy equipment as possible. There is no need for a bivouac, tent, stove or pan so you can hike in comfort with just a day pack. Altitude ranges between 1164 m (Argentiere) and 2671 m (Window of Arpette). The paths are well marked in general and should not cause any trouble for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.

A Walking Holiday in the Cevennes, France. On the 22nd of September 1878, the young Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson left Le Monastier sur Gazeille (Haute Loire) on foot with his donkey Modestine. 12 days, 220 km and many adventures later, he arrived at St Jean du Gard (Gard). Albeit less famous than “Treasure Island” and “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, his travel diary, published in 1879, entitled “Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes”,has been read and loved by generations of readers.

Today, you can experience a similar adventure by trekking on the same track as Stevenson. You can even take a mule too. The path goes through the heart of the Cevennes National Park – one of the most stunning areas of natural beauty in France. The Cevennes National Park is a protected balcony above the Mediterranean sea on an average elevation of over 1,000m. The path traverses 3 regions (Auvergne, Rh´ne-Alpes, Languedoc-Roussillon) and 4 departments (Haute Loire, Ard¨che, Lozre, Gard), but most importantly, it trails through different country sides, charged with culture, history and gastronomy. Bonne route!

In 1878 some village folk waved goodbye to Stevenson from this very spot. Although he was warned about “wolves, cold, thieves and death”, we assue you that nowadays, a walk in the Cevennes is rather more tame! In Goudet (785m), we cross a small river that has its source in near-by Mont Gerbier des Joncs. After Luc, the path straddles 2 departments; Ard¨che and Loz¨re. Further on, in Rogleton (990m), you can go directly to your hotel (45 min walk) or, if you feel like it, you can continue some 8 km to the “Trappe de Notre Dame des Neiges” (1091m, 2hr45). This challenging route begins with an exhilarating underground ascent via a remarkable tunnel hewn into the mountainside by the Italian WW1 forces. We climb a total of 647m with the help of rock steps and guiding cables fixed to the walls. The tunnel measures 1100m in length and boasts a gradient verging 45 degrees! Then we descend the Val Travenanzes, haunt of Chamois (a native species of goat-antelope) and Marmots (ground squirrels) to conclude with the impressive Fanes waterfall – its 70m drop evidently placing it as the highest waterfall in the Dolomites.

In the morning, we transfer to the picturesque village of Zdiar in Slovakia. Unmistakable for its decorated timber cottages, it is worth a look before heading for the renowned White Tatras. Our first walking day is relatively short (4h40) but strenuous enough, with an immediate 1,000m ascent from Zdiar. The path climbs slowly from 820m to 935m, taking about 45 minutes, and brings you into the White Tatras. From there it gets seriously steep, but not hugely difficult. At the end of a demanding, but highly rewarding, first day we will retire to the comfortable refuge of Zelene Pleso (1,545m) on the shore of one of the most beautiful lakes in the area.

Heading south, the path first drops down steeply to where we come across our first chains for support. Heading to Skalnate Pleso, views of the village of Tatranska Lomnica and the sub-Tatras basin are breathtaking. From here, the trail becomes easier, letting us enjoy the numerous lakes en route, before reaching the refuge in Sliesky Dom mid-afternoon. A good day walk and a well deserved rest!

Today is “the day”! We attack the highest accessible summit of the mountain chain (Rysy 2,503m). It’s also the only open border in the High Tatras between Poland and Slovakia. From here, the view of Gerlachovsky Stit (2,650m), the highest point in Slovakia and Poland is incredible! After visiting both summits, we start our way down carefully. The way is very steep and rocky! Technically this part is the most challenging. On the way down we pass Morskie Oko valley, its impressive moraines dating from the Ice ages, and the famous lake named “the eye of the sea” by the locals. If you were thinking about a celebratory beer, well, this is the time for it!

Then we climb Orla Perc, a fine ridge, “the Zenith of the Polish Tatras” with splendid views in one direction over the Tarns of Gasienicowa, up to the cable car in Kasprowy Wierch (close at 4pm, not included). From the cable car we transport you back from Kuznice to Zakopane. This is where we bid our farewells to the guide. The Final night is back to our comfortable hotel in Zakopane, the same 3* hotel.
